To Kindle or not to Kindle?

I love books. Next to breathing, reading is my next favorite thing. No wait, after breathing and eating, then reading.

So over the course of my life I've collected a lot of books. This is never more evident then when I move from one house to another. Books are very heavy. But I can't help myself. It's an addiction.

When Kindles first came out I was adamantly against them. I felt the publishing world was in enough trouble already. I feared it would be the death keel for "real" books.

However, I have to say, I now own my first Kindle. I received it as a present this year and there are a few positive things I must say in it's defense.

First, they're great for travelling. I'm one of those people who's luggage at the airport always weighs far too much because I can't decide which books to bring. Instead, I bring three or four so I'll be ready no matter what kind of reading mood I'm in. But a Kindle eliminates the need for multiple books since it can hold hundreds.

Second, you can buy books almost instantly. Sign into your amazon account, choose your book and make your purchase, and the next thing you know, it's downloaded onto your Kindle.

Third, the Kindle versions of books are usually cheaper.

What can I say? Will I ever give up my need to own tons of "regular books"? Heck no. My libaray will continue to expand as long as I have energy to drive to Barnes and Noble. Will I ever prefer sitting down with a cup of hot chocolate and my Kindle compared to a hard cover? No.

But I have to admit, there are times and reasons when a Kindle is a great thing to own. If you're looking for a Christmas gift for a compulsive reader, the Kindle might be the perfect choice.
